GATTA, Massimo y CASTANEDA-PORRAS, Francisco Pablo. Between sacrality and secularity: the sociocultural evolution of musicians of the cathedral of Durango (1635-1836). Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2024, vol.29, n.2, pp.19-45. Epub 24-Jul-2024. ISSN 0122-2066. https://doi.org/10.18273/revanu.v29n2-2024002.
The aim of this articie is to expiore the transformation of the sociai and cuiturai roie of the musicians at the Durango Cathedral from the latter half of the 17th century to the early 19th century, with a particular focus on the transition from the coioniai era to independence. It highiights how these cathedrai musicians infiuenced the evoiution of music and the creation of new sociai spaces. Aithough traditionaiiy perceived as subordinates to hegemonic institutions, it is argued that they acted as active agents in response to poiiticai and sociai crises. The study examines their contributions beyond the confines of the cathedrai and anaiyzes how their musicai practices refiected and shaped the sociocuiturai transformations of their time. The research is based on unpubiished sources from state and diocesan historicai archives and is enriched with previous investigative backgrounds. This work not only sheds light on a underexplored aspect of Durango's musical history, both locally and regionally, but also contributes to a broader understanding of music as a continuous and interconnected sociai and cuiturai phenomenon.
