GUILLAMON, Guillermina. From female singers to stage divas. Amateurism, criticism and sensitivity in the shaping of a "culture of female celebrity" in XIX century Buenos Aires. Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2024, vol.29, n.2, pp.111-130. Epub 24-Jul-2024. ISSN 0122-2066. https://doi.org/10.18273/revanu.v29n2-2024005.
This article reconstructs and analyzes a group of opera singers who developed their performances in Buenos Aires to investigate the formation of a culture of female celebrity during the 19th century. This long-term approach to five trajectories of sopranos allows us to see how in the course of becoming "divas of the stage" these women enabled and constructed other spaces, other practices and, above all, another form of amateurism, another form of consecration, other sensibilities. Likewise, in this process of professionalization - between 1820-1890 - the decisions regarding contracts, company formation and assignment of roles were always made by the singers themselves. In short, although towards the end of the 19th century the presence of the prima donnas seemed to be only related to a frivolous presence in the artistic circuit, the truth is that they never lost agency with respect to making decisions about their careers.
