Abstract

Smart meters including communications, power and control infrastructure re quired for optimum operation are one of the world’s most important topics in smart grids. The massification of these technologies requires theorics knowledge and also the formulation of policies and regulatory frameworks, analysis of associated benefits and the barriers that arise for their implementation.

This paper presents a scheme that integrates the stakeholders, processes and functionalities associated with advanced metering infrastructure through an appropriate hardware and software systems. Successful use cases of smart meters are compared, the benefits and barriers to possible future scenarios in Colombia are analyzed and some applicable use cases are presented.
