The article presents a theoretical and methodological proposal to study the political process and its actors through the notion of "political dispute". Addresses the traditional studies on political parties and social movements, to show how these actors have a number of similarities that make it necessary to analyze them in an integrated and complex way. Present the notion of political dispute as an invitation to overcome the limitations of focusing on institutional and non institutional actors. To do this the article develops the main approaches to the political process (Marxist, rational choice, and culturalist) and the constituent elements of the struggle: political, violence and conflict.
