Abstract

DE CURREA-LUGO, Víctor. Twists and Turns in the Arab World in 2011. Pap.polit. [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.1, pp.269-292. ISSN 0122-4409.

It has been over a year since the popular uprising against Arab governments. After the initial surprise, both among the public opinion and the scholars, followed the formulation of plausible explanations, then the identification of actors and agendas, and finally the characterization of the rioting. The previous uprisings in the Arab world, the demands of the protesters, the responses from the elites who combined promises and repression, the role of nato and the agenda of the oil and, finally, the first steps of transitions in countries where there have been changes of government (Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen) are the five points of this work. We deliberately exclude here other debates such as "conspiracy theory", the political Islam, and the agendas of non-Arab actors in the Middle East (United States, Iran, Israel and Turkey), issues that would be subject to future work. Part of the analysis is based on author visits to Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria in 2011.

Keywords : Arab Revolts; Revolution; Reforms; Middle East; Peace; Revueltas; Political reform; Social reform; Peace; Arab countries.
