Abstract

CEPEDA-MASMELA, Carolina. Where and who are those who Protest against Globalization? Characterization of the Participant Organizations at the World Social Forum 2001, 2004 and 2008. Pap.polit. [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.2, pp.505-536. ISSN 0122-4409.  https://doi.org/10.11144/Javeriana.papo21-2.dqog.

This article offers a characterization of the organizations and social movements subscribing the official declarations of the World Social Forum in its versions of 2001, 2004 and 2008. Its aim is to discuss some of the most recurrent criticisms that exist against them by means of: framing the analysis within the literature on global social movements from a critical perspective in IR from which the unidimensional character that liberal perspectives assign to civil society is also questioned; and describing the participants in terms of origin, frequency of participation, central claims and types of organization. The article concludes with several reflections on the need to investigate in greater depth the role of specific organizations and movements, the construction of coalitions within the Forum and the discussions around the central issues to be discussed there.

Keywords : World Social Forum; civil society; transnational coalitions; neoliberal globalization; alternatives.
