Abstract

LOPEZ DE MESA SAMUDIO, Julián. The Orientalist Faidherbe and the Prophet Mohammed: Colonial speech construction in senegal (1854 - 1889). Mem. Soc. [online]. 2012, vol.16, n.33, pp.136-152. ISSN 0122-5197.

This article shows the relationship between French Colonialism and Islamic Senegal during the merging of the French Colonies in West Africa (1854 - 1889). Based on the work of Senegal governor Louis Leon Faidherbe and some of his successors, it would be display that even though it exists some common traits in the treatment of Islam during this period, there weren't part of a defined, aware Islamic Policy, but a modern, colonial and much more civil speech that took into account - not exclusively, Islam in Africa.

Keywords : Colonialism; West Africa; Senegal; islam; Colonialism; civilization; islamic; West Africa; Senegal; islã.
