Reconstructing memory through an incidental account of a Cuban teacher who reflects on a historical period in her life, community, and popular culture.

Originality/Contribution:

The work is based on the conception of life history as a paradigm, as well as historical narrative as a theoretical and methodological resource. Furthermore, it uses historiographical details to help explain the temporal context.

Method:

From a conceptual and methodological perspective, it offers insight into Cuban schools and teaching life. This setting is often unprecedented for educational research in Cuba and Latin America.

Strategy/Information Gathering:

The author (Alicia) uses a research approach to write her memoir. She uses her log to narrate episodes, organize the narrative, and reflect on memories. The professor (Armando) guides the process by adding notes, context, and bibliographical information.

Conclusions:

The story recaptures a daily, personal, and collective effort in a precarious context and within the country’s political deadlock. But human effort and hope prevail. There is an attempt to portray the school process and the vicissitudes of a pedagogy trapped by its boundaries and popular culture.
