Abstract

PARDO DE CASTRELLON, Clara Cecilia. The Press as a Window for the Millennium Development Goals: Child Mortality, Maternal Health and HIV/AIDS in Colombia. Palabra Clave [online]. 2008, vol.11, n.2, pp.165-177. ISSN 0122-8285.

Semantic reflection on journalistic information is inherent in the terminology used when referring to topics that deal with child mortality, maternal health and HIV/AIDS, as contemplated in the Millennium Development Goals. This is apparent in the attention afforded to these topics by the press, which not only lends them visibility but also helps to build an agenda for healthy behavior and disease prevention. An analysis of the contents of six daily newspapers published in Colombia shows a favorable tendency in how the news related to these topics is positioned. As to type or genre, concise information is used more widely than interpretive genres, which are more effective for guidance and orientation on health issues

Keywords : Press; circulation of information; social information; flow of news; fight against disease; maternal-infant health; AIDS.
