Resumen

GANZABAL, María  y  LOPEZ-MEDEL, Ismael. How Spanish Newspapers Handle Information: El País and El Mundo in Response to the Film Law. Palabra Clave [online]. 2008, vol.11, n.2, pp.199-217. ISSN 0122-8285.

Spain's new film law, which is still in Parliament, is the basis for this article. It is a long and costly piece of legislation that has sparked confrontation and an ideological showdown between the country's two leading newspapers: El País and El Mundo. We find an excess of information, almost always considered relevant. However, it does not respond to the needs and interests of the public (which knows little or nothing about the issue), but to the partisan, business and political interests of the newspapers themselves and the business groups that support them. El País offers a governmental and "official" view of the bill, echoing the position of producers, who are one of the sectors that will benefit the most from the new law. El Mundo, for its part, reflects the opinion of the sector that is most controversial and critical of the project; that is, distributors, exhibitors and television in particular.

Palabras clave : Newspaper; mass media; public opinion; cinema; handing of information.
