Abstract

MORALES-MORANTE, Luis Fernando. Duration of the Frame Based on Identification of Information: Recommendations for Better Editing. Palabra Clave [online]. 2009, vol.12, n.1, pp.153-164. ISSN 0122-8285.

Defining the exact duration of a frame in an audiovisual sequence is crucial to controlling the continuity of the narrative and determining how the information in the message is distributed. However, this important decision usually is taken quickly, with little or no serious thought as to whether or not the spectator will be able to identify at least the underlying fabric of the elements comprising the image, much less the real communicative sense of a series of frames. A model to quantify audiovisual discourse from an informative standpoint is proposed in this article, and a controlled reception test is done with 18 video clips featuring different content weight and exposure time. The results indicate that audiovisual recognition often is produced by the presence of relevant elements and patterns of perception, regardless of the quantity of internal components or even the frequency of editing cuts within the sequence.

Keywords : Recognition; perception; identification; audiovisual editing; sequence; image; sound.
