MARTINEZ-REINA, Antonio M.. Socio-economic characterization of the production systems in the Caribbean region of La Mojana, Colombia. Corpoica cienc. tecnol. agropecu. [online]. 2013, vol.14, n.2, pp.165-185. ISSN 0122-8706.

The La Mojana region, in the north of Colombia, has recurrent flooding because of the overflow of the Cauca River and its tributaries. This situation is worsened due to the breaking of the embankment at the La Mexicana site. The aims of this study were to characterize the socioeconomic agricultural production systems and generate new information on the general equilibrium model and economic surplus. These patterns are based on costs obtained from workshops with producers in Magangué, Majagual, San Marcos and Nechí production sites. Production systems included in the analysis were technical (tech) rice, manual rice, tech corn monoculture, traditional corn monoculture, cassava monoculture, yam monoculture, watermelon monoculture, dual-purpose cattle and mixed dualpurpose cattle. The model indicated that there were changes in production systems in the region of La Mojana during the two periods of analysis: in 2000 and another term in 2012. Changes are not due only to the flooding conditions, as might be the case for the disappearance of the sorghum system explained by market difficulties, whereas in the case of cattle is attributed to forage deficit.
