Abstract
ARCE BARBOZA, Blanca Aurora; PENA QUINONES, Andrés Javier and CARDENAS ROCHA, Edgar Alberto. A decision-making support system to select forages according to environmental conditions in Colombia. Corpoica cienc. tecnol. agropecu. [online]. 2013, vol.14, n.2, pp.215-229. ISSN 0122-8706.
Low food supply is a major problem affecting a large percentage of the livestock population in Colombia and is largely associated to inappropriate choice of forage species; and thus not well adapted to the environmental conditions of a specific region. To mitigate this problem, without incurring increasing costs associated to changing environmental conditions, it is possible to match the adaptive capacity of species to the environment in which they grow. A decision support system was developed to select suitable forage species for a given environment. The system is based on the use of existing information about requirements of the species rather than specific experimentation. From the information gathered, a database was generated and implemented on ASP.NET in C # and SQL Server database. This system allows users to search and select pastures and forage species for specific soil and climatic conditions of a particular farm or region, through a user-friendly web platform.
