Abstract

ESCARRAGA TORRES, Laura; CUEVAS SANCHEZ, Jesús Axayácatl; BACA DEL MORAL, Julio  and  AVALOS VARGAS, Adriana. Analysis of commitments of Mexico towards agrobiodiversity in agri-food system. Cienc. Tecnol. Agropecuaria [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.1, e2174.  Epub Dec 31, 2021. ISSN 0122-8706.  https://doi.org/10.21930/rcta.vol23_num1_art:2174.

Policy commitments towards the conservation and sustainable use of agrobiodiversity are essential for a sustainable agri-food system. Given this context, the objective of this research focused on analyzing Mexico's public policy commitments related to the use and conservation of agrobiodiversity. The methodology proposed by the Agrobiodiversity Index was implemented to analyze commitments, and text mining was used with a semi-automated code developed in Python for the data collection. Three systems were analyzed: food, agriculture, and genetic resources. The results of the Index of Commitments in Agrobiodiversity showed a medium level of commitment (48.6 / 100), the highest commitments were obtained in the genetic resources system (54/100) and the lowest in the agricultural system (38/100). The absence of high commitments is due, among other things, to the temporality of the policies and programs along with the lack of synergy and clear communication between public institutions dedicated to the same objective. Given the favorable cultural and biological conditions in Mexico related to agrobiodiversity, the results of this research indicate that it is necessary to improve public policy commitments since the resilience of the agri-food system largely depends on them.
