Abstract

SOFFIATI, Arthur. Rains and droughts in the ecoregion of Sao Tome: The descent of the Goytacazes Case. Hist. Caribe [online]. 2015, vol.10, n.26, pp.135-173. ISSN 0122-8803.  https://doi.org/10.15648/hc.26.2015.6.

This article aims to show the secular work of the conquest of the South Paraiba plain with hydraulic works carried out by the National Department of Works and Sanitation, mainly based on the sanitary engineer's projects of Saturnino de Brito. These works were very expensive and they were abandoned with the extinction of this Department. They were transferred to the State Environmental Institute, but there is permanent maintenance need in floods and droughts occurrences, two climatic phenomena very present in the region. Today, such works constitute the largest collection of floodgate, piping and drainages Brazil interventions.

Keywords : Plain; fluvio-marine; climatic phenomena; hydraulic engineering.
