Abstract

ABANTO CHANI, JULIO CÉSAR. Weapons, alliances, and funds for war. Peruvian diplomacy during the Pacific War (1879). Hist. Caribe [online]. 2023, vol.18, n.42, pp.141-169.  Epub Aug 13, 2023. ISSN 0122-8803.  https://doi.org/10.15648/hc.42.2023.3629.

Diplomatic history is one of the disciplines least examined by Peruvian historiography on the Pacific War (1879-1883). In this sense, this article examines the coordination work that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs carried out with the Peruvian diplomatic missions in America and Europe when the war started in 1879 and how diplomacy became a war front. The documentation of the Central Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs allows us to know the objectives of the foreign policy developed by the Peruvian Foreign Ministry. It also shows the importance of information processing and analysis of the international scene.

Keywords : War of the Pacific (1879-1883); Diplomatic history; Government of Mariano Ignacio Prado (1876-1879); Peruvian diplomatic missions abroad.
