Abstract

DIAZ RICO, JHOJAN ALEJANDRO. From Undesirables to agents of progress. Historiographic analysis of the social integration process of arabs in Colombia. Hist. Caribe [online]. 2023, vol.18, n.42, pp.201-230.  Epub Aug 13, 2023. ISSN 0122-8803.  https://doi.org/10.15648/hc.42.2023.3631.

I analyze two of the historiographic currents that study Arab migration to Colombia and its integration process. The first one studies this process through an economic lens, while the other does so through a racial perspective. Despite their important contribution, these lines do not situate their interpretations in a broad socio-racial scenario in which racialized categories founded an ideal of a modern, whitewashed and economically productive citizen. I suggest that studying the integration process of the Arabs through the lens of citizenship enables us to unify the economic and racial arguments in a single interpretation.

Keywords : Immigrants; social integration; race; economic positioning; citizenship.
