Abstract

CRUZ CARRILLO, Anastasia; MORENO FIGUEREDO, Giovanni  and  TOBON, Juan Francisco. Pharmacological Management of Canine Hyperlipidemia. Rev. Med. Vet. [online]. 2011, n.21, pp.73-85. ISSN 0122-9354.

Rise of triglycerides and cholesterol in canines favors the appearance of possibly dangerous diseases. Although hypolipemiants pharmacology has mainly developed in human medicine, veterinarians must know the useful drugs to control this kind of situations, as they are common in certain patients. Thus, the purpose of this review was to make a reference to the most used drugs to control hyperlipidemia in canines. Some of the most important pharmacologic groups for this treatment are statins, fibric acid inhibitors, bile acid sequestrants, niacins, cholesterol absorption inhibitors and the most recently used in veterinary, dirlotapide. All of these drugs may be included in the protocols for the integral treatment of patients with hyperlipidemias and obesity.

Keywords : cholesterol; obesity; lipoproteins.
