Abstract

BOLANOS-CUBILLOS, Nacor et al. LIST OF FISHES KNOWN FROM SAN ANDRÉS, OLD PROVIDENCE AND SAINT CATALINA ARCHIPELAGO, BIOSPHERE RESERVE SEAFLOWER, WESTERN COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN. Bol. Invest. Mar. Cost. [online]. 2015, vol.44, n.1, pp.127-162. ISSN 0122-9761.

The western Caribbean Colombian archipelago of San Andrés and Old Providence and Saint Catalina includes the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, declared in 2000 by UNESCO. In order to contribute to the Reserve natural resources baseline, a list of fishes is presented herein, reviewing published and grey literature about the fish fauna of the region appearing in the last 70 years; original data coming from visual censuses and fisheries evaluation were included as well. A total of 653 fish species, distributed in 121 families, are reported from the area; 17 of those species are new records for the islands. The main richness has been detected in Old Providence Island (487 species). The importance of the archipelago as a biodiversity reservoir in the Grand Caribbean is remarked.

Keywords : Ichthyofauna; Biodiversity; Seaflower Biosphere Reserve; Tropical Western Atlantic.
