Abstract

FIGUEROA, ISABELA  and  SILVA, VINI RABASSA DA. Social protection policies and indigenous peoples in Colombia and Brazil: Tensions between citizenship and self-determination. Rev. Derecho Estado [online]. 2019, n.44, pp.133-160. ISSN 0122-9893.  https://doi.org/10.18601/01229893.n44.06.

This article challenges the effectiveness of poverty reduction policies applied to Indigenous peoples in Brazil and Colombia. It shows that social programs do not substantively address the right of self-determination for the target populations. It also indicates the deepening of inherent contradictions resulting from social policies put forth by a socioeconomic system that differs in essential ways from the forms of production, organization, and reproduction of Indigenous peoples.

Keywords : Social Protection; Social Assistance; Indigenous Population; Poverty; Human Rights.
