Abstract
BUITRAGO-PENA, María del Pilar; GUEVARA-JIMENEZ, Mónica and CABRERA-CIFUENTES, Karol Andrea. Social Representations of Gender and Punishment and their Influence in Disciplining Offspring. educ.educ. [online]. 2009, vol.12, n.3, pp.53-71. ISSN 0123-1294.
The purpose of this qualitative study is to contribute to an understanding of the social representations (SR) of punishment and gender found in adults concerning the corrective measures taken with boys and girls. Case studies constituted the method, and semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. A comparison of the information provided by the selected families (nuclear, female or male single-parent) led to the conclusion that the process of RS construction is rooted in forms of parenting with regard to beliefs, standards, practices and styles, and these representations have an important impact on the differences in corrective measures used with offspring.
