Abstract

RODRIGUEZ-JIMENEZ, Olga Rosalba  and  GARCIA-PINILLA, José Ignacio. Teaching Circles as a Strategy for Improving Reading Comprehension. Educ. Educ. [online]. 2021, vol.24, n.2, pp.267-286.  Epub Sep 30, 2021. ISSN 0123-1294.  https://doi.org/10.5294/edu.2021.24.2.5.

Reading is an essential process for learning; therefore, elementary education implements multiple programs and strategies to improve it. Teaching Circles are suggested as a structured dialogue between teachers to propose and put into practice strategies to improve reading comprehension. The sample included 11 teachers and 59 students. We measured teachers' teaching approach and self-efficacy and students' reading comprehension, taking intelligence as a control variable. The results describe an improvement in teachers' self-efficacy, interaction components, and the student-centered approach, specifically the Global Comprehension sub-process. We conclude that the strategy can be effective in shifting the teacher-centered perspective; however, teachers' continuity and commitment and appropriate social context conditions are required for its application.
