ARIAS GUZMAN, Andrés Augusto; ARCADIA PERALTA, Édgar Antonio y ASCENCIO IBANEZ, Regina. Schools and communities in Tepic-Aguamilpa: A possible intercultural education region. Educ. Educ. [online]. 2024, vol.27, n.1, e2715. Epub 14-Ago-2025. ISSN 0123-1294. https://doi.org/10.5294/edu.2024.27.1.5.
The social contexts of communities with significant ethnic diversity are key spaces for the practical knowledge and experience of teachers engaged in intercultural education. To recognize and describe these contexts, this article presents findings from an ethnographic and participatory research project carried out in an intercultural region of Nayarit, Mexico. The study discussed the framework of critical interculturality within the New Mexican School and analyzes the educational settings of Wikárika communities located between the city of Tepic, the capital of Nayarit, and the Aguamilpa hydroelectric dam. Based on interviews, field visits, and data collection, we argue that a critical intercultural approach as a curricular foundation to address ethnic plurality must not only confront discrimination, marginalization, and inequality, but also move beyond historically rooted indigenist discourses. Instead, it should foster a genuine disposition toward dialogue and collaborative education grounded in the local context and ethnic identities.
