Abstract
MILQUEZ SANABRIA, Harvey Andrés and MONTAGUT, Juan Camilo. Impact of emerging pollutants in aquatic environment and treatments for control and removal in water bodies. Ing. compet. [online]. 2023, vol.25, n.3, e-30412551. Epub Aug 30, 2023. ISSN 0123-3033. https://doi.org/10.25100/iyc.v25i3.12551.
This paper aims to review of the environmental impact generated by emerging pollutants (EPs) in the aquatic environment and how to treat them, when they are discharged into water bodies. The paper presents a global vision and a regional vision (Latin America) of the emerging pollutants (EPs) that are present in the water, whether domestic wastewater, industrial wastewater or drinking water and in that way identify which are the main emerging pollutants (EPs) and show the importance and impact they have on the environment and the repercussions of ignorance and lack of legislation when controlling discharges on water bodies. The removal efficiencies for emerging contaminants through common treatments (coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, etc.) is moderately acceptable with values between 30% and 60%, while through tertiary treatments (advanced oxidation, treatments with hydrogen peroxide, UV light, etc.) the removal efficiency achieves percentages between 80% and 95% indicating the high capacity to remove these pollutants.
Keywords : Emerging pollutants; treatment; wastewater; drinking water; environmental impact.
