Abstract
SALAZAR E, Julián A and CONSTANTINO, Luis Miguel. DESCRIPTION OF NEW SPECIES OF (LEPIDOPTERA: PIERIDAE, NYMPHALIDAE, SATYRINAE, ITHOMIINAE, RIODINIDAE) IN COLOMBIA. Bol. Cient. Mus. Hist. Nat. Univ. Caldas [online]. 2007, vol.11, n.1, pp.167-186. ISSN 0123-3068.
Three new species and six subspecies of butterflies from Colombia are described: Alesa esmeralda n. sp., Cartea chiribiquetensis n. sp., Hesperocharis ñambii n.sp., Haetera piera sanguinolenta n.ssp., Pierella lamia colombiana n. spp., Pierella lena salma, n. spp., Pierella helvina caribea n. spp., Elzunia humboldt quinduensis n. spp., and Elzunia humboldt purace n. spp. from specimens collected in the Departments of Cauca, Nariño, Meta, Amazonas, Putumayo, Sucre and Quindio. Also, the taxonomic status of Elzunia descandollesi (Staudinger, 1885) from the Department of Antioquia in the Cordillera Occidental is examined, since it recovers its taxonomic status as a subspecies of E. humboldt (Laterille, 1809) based on biogeographical studies and field samples that demonstrate that E. humboldt descandollesi is a good subspecies with restricted stable populations in both slopes of the Cordillera Occidental range in the departments of Antioquia and Risaralda. This subspecies appears as mentioned in Lamas (2004) synonymous to E. humboldt Humboldt, that is an endemic subspecies of the Cordillera Central of Colombia that presents a very different wing pattern.
