THE QUEEN CONCH (Strombus gigas Linnaeus, 1758) IN THE COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN: MONOGRAPHIC REVISION. Bol. Cient. Mus. Hist. Nat. Univ. Caldas [online]. 2007, vol.11, n.1, pp.301-332. ISSN 0123-3068.

This text constitutes a summary of the state of knowledge of the biology, fishing and attempts at ex situ breeding in the Colombian Caribbean of the gastropod mollusk Strombus gigas Linnaeus, 1758 (queen conch), emphasizing the use made of it by non-commercial and commercial fisheries. The biological and populational detected state is analyzed through the evaluations carried out in the insular areas, as well as continental areas and, finally, recommendations are made on some handling measures and classification that should be of immediate implementation, because if they are carried out the threatened resource will enter the extinction process in a short time.

Palavras-chave : Strombus gigas; queen conch; ecology; biology; fishery; aquaculture; Caribbean; Colombia.
