Resumen

CUARTAS B., Yamileth  y  CASTANO R., Elmer. BOTANICAL AND PHITOCHEMICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE NIGHT-FLOWERING JASMINE (Cestrum nocturnum L.). Bol. Cient. Mus. Hist. Nat. Univ. Caldas [online]. 2008, vol.12, n.1, pp.17-23. ISSN 0123-3068.

Since a generalized ignorance regarding Cestrum nocturnum L. exists, it was decided to carry out a study describing the botanical, agrarian, phenological and phitochemical aspects of this specie. For said purpose, an analytical documentary methodology with the phenological description was implemented, using nursery sowings in Manizales, Colombia and a phitochemical analysis in the Agro-Industrial Processes Laboratory of Universidad de Caldas. This study was carried out on plants located in gardens of the city, where Cestrum nocturnum L. was found. The night-flowering jasmine was planted at 2250 meters above sea level to confront its live behavior with the literature revision. This sowing was made using 17 cm stakes in length, cut in vegetative state. This plant, belonging to the solanaceae family, contains a relatively high concentration of alkaloids such as nicotine, atropine, escopolamine and hiosciamine, which can cause hallucinogenic effects.

Palabras clave : Cestrum nocturnum botany; Cestrum nocturnum L. fenology; Cestrum nocturnum L. phitochemistry.
