Abstract

SIERRA-GIRALDO, Julio Andrés; GIRALDO-PAMPLONA, Wilson  and  CUARTAS, Luisa Fernanda. Rescue, transfer, relocation and monitoring of vascular epiphytes (Araceae, Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae) in the Guavio region (Colombian Eastern Cordillera). Bol. Cient. Mus. Hist. Nat. Univ. Caldas [online]. 2023, vol.27, n.1, pp.33-51.  Epub Aug 24, 2023. ISSN 0123-3068.  https://doi.org/10.17151/bccm.2023.27.1.2.

The epiphytes are an important component in tropical forest. Due to the decrease of their natural populations, some families of vascular epiphytes (Orchidaceae and Bromeliaceae) and in general all non-vascular epiphytes have a prohibition on its use in Colombia. Now, as a strategy to mitigate the loss of biodiversity, his rescue and relocation has been implemented. This paper presents the methods used during the rescue, relocation and monitoring of vascular epiphytes in the Guavio region (Cundinamarca, Colombia), activities carried out during the construction of the “Línea de transmisión eléctrica a 230 kV Guavio - Nueva Esperanza”. 1477 individuals were relocation between Araceae (19 individuals/1 species), Bromeliaceae (383/12) and Orchidaceae (1075/46), which were arranged in three final relocation areas or epifitarios. We carried out reproductive and phytosanitary phenological monitoring for two. Survival in general for the three epifitarios was 66.7% (985 individuals) and a mortality of 33.3% (492 individuals). During the two years in the three epifitarios the phenological reproductive state without flower (SF) and the good phytosanitary state prevailed (B). Some peaks of start of flowering (IF), flowering (FL) and fructification (FR) are associated with rainy seasons. This study is the basis for subsequent rescue, relocation and monitoring of vascular epiphytes in Colombia, where new variables must be considered, such as the presence of new roots, interactions with animals, the presence of dehiscent fruits and the measurement of abiotic variables.

Keywords : Phenological reproductive; phytosanitary; survival; mortality; epifitario.
