Abstract
QUIMBAYO-DIAZ, Sebastián et al. Cerambycidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) Held in the Entomological Museum of the University of Tolima, Ibagué, Colombia. Bol. Cient. Mus. Hist. Nat. Univ. Caldas [online]. 2025, vol.29, n.1, pp.199-216. Epub Nov 05, 2025. ISSN 0123-3068. https://doi.org/10.17151/bccm.2025.29.1.10.
Longhorned beetles (Cerambycidae) are economically and biologically significant, yet their diversity in Colombia-currently estimated at 920 species-is likely underestimated due to insufficient sampling and regional studies. This may be attributed to the lack of studies and the limited exploration of various regions. Biological collections, as repositories of biodiversity data, are crucial for advancing knowledge of these taxa. This study aimed to curate, identify, and systematize the Cerambycidae specimens deposited in the Entomological Museum of the University of Tolima (MENT-UT), while expanding understanding of their diversity and distribution in Tolima and Colombia. Specimens were identified to genus and species levels, updated, and systematized using taxonomic keys, illustrations, and descriptions. Geographic and taxonomic representativeness, temporal value, curatorial status, and specimen deterioration were also assessed. Collection health (86.70% integrity), geographic coverage (94.37% from Tolima), and specimen condition (11 over 50 years old) were assessed. Among 391 specimens (4 subfamilies, 50 genera, 48 species), we report 25 new departmental records, 4 new country records, and 1 new species. These results highlight the irreplaceable role of biological collections in documenting biodiversity.
