Abstract

DE DOMINGO-BARTOLOME, María  and  LOPEZ-GUZMAN, José. THE "MEDICALIZATION" OF FOOD. pers.bioét. [online]. 2014, vol.18, n.2, pp.170-183. ISSN 2027-5382.  https://doi.org/10.5294/PEBI.2014.18.2.7.

For decades, both the health authorities and health professionals placed special emphasis on the importance of the relationship between food and health maintenance. However, it should be noted that although this relationship is not new, in recent years it has overflown the strict food and nutrition framework, which has generated a plethora of food products claiming health-related statements. Given this situation, and in order to protect consumers, legislators in the European Union have created a new legal form while, in the scientific field, it continues to investigate the health benefits of these foods. The "medicalization of food" has, not without controversy, been developed in this context.

Keywords : medicalization; statements; food; science; pharmaceutical law; ethics.
