Abstract

RUIZ, Jorge; PARRA, Edgar  and  LOPEZ-CARR, David. A Geographical View of Urban Parks in the City of Tunja, Boyacá, Colombia. Perspectiva Geográfica [online]. 2015, vol.20, n.2, pp.245-268. ISSN 0123-3769.

Latin-American cities are growing while the quantity and quality of parks per capita shrinks. Also, there is a gap in the research, which needs to be filled in order to address urban public policy concerns. Our null hypothesis is that Tunja urban parks provide inadequate and unequal access and infrastructure. A census of the city's parks took place in 2010. For each park, GPS shape files were created and park infrastructure was recorded (chairs, playgrounds, sports fields, etc.). We found that with only 1.34 m2 of green space per capita, Tunja does not comply with the national parameter of 15 m2. Our null hypothesis was proven correct. Most of the city's parks are small, clustered, and with limited infrastructure. The great parks of the past are no longer designed and some neighborhoods remain devoid of park access, suggesting a reverse of sustainable urban planning.

Keywords : environmental geography; urban geography; land planning; urban parks; Tunja.
