Depression, anxiety and behavioral disorders are among the main causes of illness and disability in young people, hence the relevance of investigating the state of social skills (HHSS) and mental health (MH). The type of research is quantitative non-experimental, descriptive-relational, with a sample of 179 students (116 females and 53 males), between 16 and 24 years old, from 12 technical and technology programs. The SCL-90-R and the Evaluation Scale of Social Skills in Adolescents (EEHSA) instruments were applied, performing a normalization of the data from the classical measurement theory. It was detected that, when there are precarious HHSS, the risk factors related to SM increase, especially in anxiety, depression and obsessions, in addition to finding that there are specific HHSS that are more related to certain affectations in SM; however, despite a good development in these, the risk levels are high. It is concluded that the relationship between HHSS and MS is complex and multifaceted, being necessary to conduct research that understands the various contextual, economic, family, academic, cultural and gender factors in order to generate early detection and/or promotion-prevention strategies according to each educational context.
