Abstract

BANQUEZ MENDOZA, JESÚS GUILLERMO; MARTINEZ-GONZALEZ, MARINA; AMAR, JOSÉ AMAR  and  CRESPO, FERNANDO A.. Coping with conflicts and moral disconnection among Afro-descendant victims of the internal armed conflict in Colombia. Psicol. caribe [online]. 2025, vol.42, n.1, pp.9-36.  Epub Feb 11, 2025. ISSN 0123-417X.  https://doi.org/10.14482/psdc.42.1.741.528.

The research sought to demonstrate dependence between the variables coping with conflict and moral disconnection with the victimizing events, age, and gender of the victims of the internal armed conflict in Colombia, especially the Afro-descendant communities: Libertad and Rincón del Mar.

For the above, an ex post facto retrospective group comparison study is proposed. The following hypotheses are tested: (H1) The behaviors related to coping with the conflict (AC) and the mechanisms of moral disengagement (MDM) depend on the victimizing event (HV) or crimes committed against the civilian population during the armed conflict. (H2) AC and MDM rely on the age of the victims. (H3) AC and MDM use depends on the gender of the victims. The sample was made up of 344 individuals, divided between victims of torture, forced displacement, and sexual violence. In the case of Rincón del Mar, victims of sexual violence are consistent in desisting from the conflict once it has started, a response that tends considerably downward among displaced people as victims of torture. In the case of Libertad, victims of sexual violence are prone to flee when the conflict is imminent, while victims of torture fight back and victims of displacement divide their decisions between dialogue and response to the attack. Regarding MD mechanisms, the age groups under 20 years and between 21 and 40 vehemently reject moral justification as a defense mechanism in the Rincón del Mar case.

Keywords : moral disengagement; coping with conflicts; people of African descent; armed conflict.
