Abstract

MILLAN-OTERO, KATY LUZ; VILLA ORREGO, HERNÁN ALBERTO  and  SANCHEZ, ROXANNE GARCÉS. Biophilia and psychological well-being: Qualitative analysis of mental health associated with living in natural environments. Psicol. caribe [online]. 2025, vol.42, n.1, pp.147-177.  Epub Feb 11, 2025. ISSN 0123-417X.  https://doi.org/10.14482/psdc.42.1.986.251.

This study aimed to understand the mental health perceptions following the migration of individuals from urban areas to rural environments in Eastern Antioquia. The research was conducted with a qualitative approach, specifically utilizing a collective case study method. Forty participants from municipalities such as La Ceja, El Retiro, Concepción, Cocorná, Guarne, and El Carmen de Viboral were involved. Techniques used included semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and focus groups. The results indicated that tranquility, well-being, and outdoor physical activities were among the factors that most motivated the participants. On the other hand, security in contrast to urban chaos, the development of healthy living habits, and the reduction of stress and irritability were associated with residential satisfaction conditions. Ultimately, participants wish to live with the benefits provided by nature without foregoing the comforts of the city in terms of community facilities. The role of nature and green areas in the psychological, physical, and emotional well-being of human beings is discussed.
