Abstract

SUMMARY Members of the genus Aeromonas are recognized agents of diseases in humans, which can cause a variety of gastroenteritis and extraintestinal processes, this bacteria is acquired primarily through consumption of waterborne food such as fish, seafood and drinking water. In order to determine the presence of Aeromonas in fish samples marketed in Pamplona (Norte de Santander), there were analyzed a total of 51 fresh fish samples: Catfish (Brachyplatistoma spp.), Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), Tilapia (Oreochromis spp.), Rampuche (Pimelodus navarroi), Bocachico (Prochilodus magdalenae), Dorada (Brachyplatystoma flavicans) and Sierra (Pristis pectinata); additionally, it was compared the traditional biochemical identification of the strains with the miniaturized MicrobactTM kit. In 37 samples corresponding to 76.47 %, it was confirmed the growth of Aeromonas spp. The results showed that the highest prevalence of Aeromonas spp. appeared in: Trout 100% and Rampuche 100%, Dorada 80%, Catfish 73.33%, Bocachico 60%, Sierra 60% and Tilapia 50%. By using the Microbact TM, 87% of the strains corresponded to A. hydrophila, A. caviae 8%, A. veronii veronii 2% and Plesiomonas shigelloides 2%. The high percentage of isolation of Aeromonas strains in the samples indicates that the fish commercialized in Pamplona can be an important vehicle for this microorganism, considered emergent pathogen for humans.
