Abstract

The study of the relationship between the menstrual cycle and athletic performance is present among the latest publications on women’s sports, trying to contribute to an improved process for preparing women in various sports, and prevention of disorders of menstrual function. Menstrual cycle characteristics of high-level athletes have no significant differences with respect to the menstrual function of nonathletic women; however, there are statistics of a higher percentage of female reproductive disorders compared to the general population. There is considerable variation in cycle characteristics within the groups studied, which authors have associated with the location in the “scale of femininity”. Premenstrual and menstrual phases, along with the ovulatory phase, are the most difficult for athletes to have when facing training loads and competition. Concerning menarche, late maturity is typical of early initiation sports modalities and where it is required to maintain low body weight. We present the latest trends and research results in the field of women’s training.
