Abstract

FIGUEROA, Margarita  and  SANCHEZ VEGA, Rosaura. "The fictitious short story": metafiction as an expression of Spanish American Avant-Garde. Folios [online]. 2008, n.28, pp.13-23. ISSN 0123-4870.

The objective of this study is to analyze how metafiction, on which Julio Garmendia’s "El cuento ficticio" (1927) is concentrated, works in order to determine that its metafiction is an expression of the Spanish American Avant-Garde of the twenties and thirties, or first Avant-Garde. Firstly, Garmendia’s text is studied as a model of avant-garde metafiction because it responds to the breaking with the realist tradition and to experimentalism. Experimentalism of the metafictional structure of "El cuento ficticio" because it uses an expositive discourse in the present and future tenses that replaces the narrative discourse in the past tense as a verbal form which characterizes narration (Weinrich). In the last part, Garmendia’s text is related to the Spanish American first avant-garde novels that have the same metafictional structure. Garmendia’s text is the first Spanish American metafictional short story that responds to avant-garde innovations, deriving from the metafiction which appears in Spanish American avant-garde novels.

Keywords : Metafiction; avant-garde; breaking of tradition; experimentalism.
