CALLE-ARANGO, Lina  e  MURILLO, Javier H.. Argumentative Text as an Introduction to Academic Discourse at CESA. Folios [online]. 2018, n.47, pp.81-98. ISSN 0123-4870.

This research paper aimed to evaluate the argumentative writing skills of 264 Colombian young men and women who joined Colegio de Estudios Superiores de Administración (CESA) before and after taking the Written Communication course offered by the school during the first semester of the career. The sample consisted of freshmen from the first and second semesters of 2015 and the first semester of 2016, whose writing competency in the production of argumentative texts was tested before and after finishing the first academic semester. This was carried out through a first diagnostic test defined by the School of Humanities, and a subsequent assessment after taking the course on Written Communication. Both this diagnostic test and those performed throughout the semester were defined from the same criteria-(i) abstraction of information, (ii) structure and reasoning, and (iii) writing and readability-and with the same argumentative purpose, such that they could be compared. The goal is, then, to descriptively evaluate these results in order to establish a comparison between one and the other and thus analyze the work of students in their written and argumentative production. The study showed that, in general terms, the way in which the Written Communication course is handled is successful, particularly for those students who scored average or low. However, the possible neglect of those with higher scores is worrying.
