Abstract

ANGARITA CACERES, Rafael Gonzalo. The Criterion of Clearness and Distinctness in the "Fifth Meditation". Folios [online]. 2020, n.52, pp.3-18.  Epub Dec 09, 2020. ISSN 0123-4870.

This research article shows a comparative analysis of the certainty criterion in the Latin version (written by Descartes) and the French version (supported by Descartes) from the "Fifth Meditation". To find the elements that allow to better articulate an answer to the found disparity, the author proposes to refer to some core sections from Descartes' work where such criterion is present: Discourse and Principia. The findings will lead us to identify a triple movement in the presentation of the certainty criterion in the "Fifth meditation": the implicit criterion (once referred to distinctness and the other to clearness, always in connection with evidence), the explicit criterion-only in the French version-, and finally the explicit mention of the criterion in both the French and Latin versions.

Keywords : Descartes; Fifth Meditation; discourse; principia; the clearness and distinctness' criterion.
