Abstract

MORA-BUSTOS, Armando; ORTIZ-VILLEGAS, Alejandra I.  and  GARCIA-ZUNIGA, H. Antonio. Gerund Predication in Spanish. Folios [online]. 2022, n.56, pp.125-140.  Epub Nov 10, 2022. ISSN 0123-4870.  https://doi.org/10.17227/folios.56-13626.

This article concerns gerund predication. The contribution is oriented to the fact that the Spanish language not only has as the nucleus of a sentence an inflected verb, but also the gerund acts as the nucleus of a clause predication. Gerund predication encodes and expresses grammatical features through particular mechanisms; the subject argument (effector-agent) is exhibited, generally, in a nominal phrase located in a preverbal position; the object argument and the object-dative argument are indexed, through clitics, in the core of the predication, the noun phrases with which they refer make explicit the properties of the thematic roles. The marking system of these constructions is mixed: marking in the dependent and marking in the nucleus. Aspectual and mode values are expressed by the lexical gerund and by the adjuncts. The variety of Spanish that is the object of the study is Mexican, particularly of Mexico City.

Keywords : predication; independent gerund; arguments; aspect; mode.
