The aim of this work is to identify what has been studied on the Colombian railway and to propose the main topics to be studied in order to better understand the future of rail freight transport in Colombia. The paper is based on a descriptive literature review of the Colombian railways, which allowed to identify 4 recurring subjects: governmental administrative problems, competition with road mode, coal transportation, and some technical issues such as geometric design, railway capacity, efficiency, modal integration, and transport modeling. In addition to the review, which is valuable for decision makers on international trade, economic policy, and regional economy, this paper identifies some questions for future research.
