[online]. 2019, vol.35, n.151, pp.145-158. ISSN 0123-5923.  https://doi.org/10.18046/j.estger.2019.151.3136.

The aim of this study is to understand the development of leadership to ensure business succession, especially through actions targeted at those are working in key positions, that is, those in which the performance of people reflects directly in the company's results. The research was based on the database of Melhores Empresas Para se Trabalhar research (The Best Companies to Work for), where 13 companies present in Minas Gerais (Brazil) were considered, and also a case study was conducted by interviewing two professionals of the Human Resources Department and six top Executives from one of the participating companies that stood out for their investments in succession. As a result, it has been identified that such development actions contribute to the succession process, especially learning from experience. However, the challenge of (re)signifying succession as a strategic, long-term, and business-oriented investment was identified, no longer as a usual replacement action.

Keywords : succession; learning from experience; leadership development; leadership training; human resources management.
