Cuban literature's revitalization during the economic crisis called "Special Period in Time of Peace" is connected to the surfacing of accumulated tensions. The present essay argues that the emergence of a series of narrative poetics springs from a complex social and historical context characterized by changing frames of reference, the break with imposed literary models, and the formulation of a new aesthetic within the fictions themselves. In order to demonstrate this, the essay summarizes the cultural coordinates, the theoretical influences, the function of literary criticism and the greediness of foreign publishers as the primary promoters of literature, as well as the adaptation of government censorship to the new conditions.
