Abstract

DARIO VELEZ, Germán. THE MORAL PROBLEM OF THE WORK OF ART IN THE IMMORALIST BY ANDRÉ GIDE AND ITS POSSIBLE HERMENEUTIC-EXISTENTIAL EXPLANATION. Lit. teor. hist. crit. [online]. 2013, vol.15, n.2, pp.121-145. ISSN 0123-5931.

With a strict moral of self-care a man manages to escape a deadly disease. The principles of the treatment are converted by him into a doctrine. The rigor of this doctrine kills his wife. Left to himself and his remorse, he calls on his friends for help... This is the plot of The Immoralist by André Gide and also of the great problem of ethics that it poses: how to take possession of oneself without losing the other? Through an existential-hermeneutic reading of this work, this paper presents an analysis and an explanation of this paradox.

Keywords : appropriation; existence; hermeneutics; immoralism; liberty; nihilism.
