The author addresses Rubem Fonseca's literary production of the end of the 1960s (Lúcia McCartney) in the light of the military coup of 1964. The analysis, focused mainly on the short story "Desempenho", explores the links between text and context on the basis of Adorno's notion of objective form. The article also reviews some classical readings of Fonseca's work (Alfredo Bosi, Antonio Candido, João Luiz Lafetá).
