Abstract

BOAL, Julian. TOWARD A POLITICAL HISTORY OF THE THEATER OF THE OPPRESSED. Lit. teor. hist. crit. [online]. 2014, vol.16, n.1, pp.41-79. ISSN 0123-5931.  https://doi.org/10.15446/lthc.v16n1.44326.

The article discusses the way in which the theater of the oppresses has generated new effects beyond the specific historical situation in which it arose. The original articulation among the critique of theatrical representation, the call for popular participation, and the struggle against oppression, achieved by this genre in the 1970s, gave it an enormous critical potential that has nevertheless been displaced in the contemporary world. The main objective of the article is to map the displacement of these three terms (representation, participation, and oppression), as well as the effects of such displacement on the theater of the oppressed.

Keywords : theater of the oppressed; political theater; oppression; representation; participation.
