On the basis of Michel Foucault's ideas regarding the construction of a genealogy, the article analyzes Juan Forn's María Domecq as a postmodern historical novel, or new historical novel, that reformulates the narratives through which a family identity (which, in many cases, coincides with a country's identity) is built. In the selected text, it is possible to detect the presence of a discourse aimed at denouncing and unmasking the atrocities perpetrated by those in power. Within a broader perspective, it is possible to say that this critical revision of the dominant elite questions the official narrative of past events, that is, the way in which History is written. That revisionist movement reveals that historical memory is the result of a relation of forces that must be unveiled and denounced.
