Resumen

HIGASHI, Alejandro. Three Decades of Professionalization in Literary Studies in Mexico: Some Consequences. Lit. teor. hist. crit. [online]. 2015, vol.17, n.2, pp.59-77. ISSN 0123-5931.  https://doi.org/10.15446/lthc.v17n2.51273.

In this paper, I reflect on various aspects related to the professionalization of the field of literary studies in Mexico, especially in light of the founding of the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores [National System of Researchers]. This federal institution defined-for the first time-desirable investigatory profiles as approved patterns of quantifiable requirements reinforced by economic incentives. I primarily deal with the way in which this new workforce was received in the cultural field of literary studies by a dominant and prolific intellectual hegemony situated outside of the university. In addition, I discuss the opinions regarding the formation of specialized theoretical languages and their capacity for training professionals in the classroom (which did not necessarily coincide with the figure of the critic forged in previous years). Professionalization led criticism to specialization and paved the way for maintaining said style of discourse and diffusing it among members of their academic community.

Palabras clave : academic professionalization; specialized languages; literary theory in Mexico; Sistema Nacional de Investigadores.
