Abstract

ANDRADE, María Mercedes. Teaching and Research in the Humanities: Beyond a Modest Proposal. Lit. teor. hist. crit. [online]. 2015, vol.17, n.2, pp.149-164. ISSN 0123-5931.  https://doi.org/10.15446/lthc.v17n2.51283.

In "Teaching and Research in the Humanities: Beyond a Modest Proposal," María Mercedes Andrade reveals the effect wrought on contemporary university teaching and research in the humanities by assessment models that fail to account for the specificity of the humanistic disciplines. After discussing how the humanities have been classified within universities, Andrade argues that the "corporate university," aimed at developing "abilities," values the humanities only insofar as they contribute to the development of practical skills, thereby ignoring their intrinsic value. Andrade further explains the way assessment models overlook the traditions of humanistic production, thereby establishing a distorted view of it. Finally, the article presents a reflection on the role of the humanities in the university and the need to re-evaluate the models used for assessing teaching and research.

Keywords : humanities; corporate university; developing abilities; measuring research.
