SOUTO SALOM, Julio e "JANOVE" SOUZA PIRES, Warley. The Boom of Spoken Poetry Slams in Brazil. Lit. teor. hist. crit. [online]. 2020, vol.22, n.2, pp.381-419. ISSN 0123-5931. https://doi.org/10.15446/lthc.v22n2.86096.
We present the recent boom of spoken poetry slams in Brazil, from a position located in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. A chronology of the global phenomenon of spoken poetry slams helps us understand its arrival in Brazil and its particular local configuration. Here, the slams movement was organized by slum youth in the central urban areas and gradually went decentralized. We present a brief poetic selection of nearby slammers, analyzing the heterogeneity of textual and performance styles, highlighting the predominance of feminist, anti-racist, and peripheral perspectives. These works are conveyed in diverse media: from the voice and the body of the poets in the slams circles to photocopied fanzines, books, and videos on the internet, allowing the voices to circulate beyond the author/public co-presence. Spoken poetry slams constitute an autonomous space for enunciation and listening, powerful for projecting insurgent discourses and subjectivities.
